Mary Elizabeth (Grove) Herrin, 86, of Decatur, IL passed away at 4:23 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 15, 2010) at Decatur Memorial Hospital.

A graveside service to celebrate Mary's life will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 19, 2010) at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday (Oct. 18, 2010) at Dawson & Wikoff North Chapel. Mary's services will be officiated by Pastor Kathy King-Nobles. Memorial contributions may be directed to Decatur Memorial Hospital or to DMH Hospice. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family at www.dawson-wikoff.com.

Mary was born in Decatur, IL on May 23, 1924, to Kenneth and Pauline (Plummer) Grove. She was a 1943 graduate of Stephen Decatur High School, she attended the Decatur Secretarial School before beginning her working life at A.E. Staley Manufacturing Co. in Decatur. In 1946 she moved to Springfield where she worked for the State of Illinois Department of Revenue. While there she met Robert North Herrin of Lanesville, IL and they were married on April 7, 1948. Mary and Robert moved to Decatur later that year where they both worked for Grove's Restaurant which was operated by the Kenneth Grove family until 1965. Mary then worked at Pershing Bank until her retirement in 1980. In retirement Mary enjoyed golf, needlepoint and traveling. She was an active member of the Lambda Tau Delta Sorority for many years. She had been a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church.

Mary is survived by two daughters: Judith (James) Headley of St. Louis, MO, and Nancy (Richard) Robinson of Alexis, IL; four grandchildren: Alison Headley and Megan (Luiz Tauil) Headley both of Austin, TX, Lara (Russell) Johnston of Little York, IL and Jacob (Hannah) Robinson of Alexis, IL; one great granddaughter: Isabell Johnston of Little York, IL. Mary is also survived by a brother: John (Donna) Grove of Springfield, IL. Her parents and husband preceded her in death.

Mary's family thanks the staff at Decatur Memorial Hospital and DMH Hospice for their loving care during her final days. Thank you also to the staff and residents of The Primrose Retirement Community for their support and friendship. Special thanks to Dr. William B. Franklin who was not only a caring physician but a friend as well.

Nancy and family, I am sorry to hear of your mom's passing but I know she lived life to the fullest!! I can still see her at the wedding and she really did have a very good time and I am so glad she got to be there that day. My prayers are with you and your family! I remember the first time I met your mom. I knew then we were going to be friends. She and I had something in common- although I don't know what it was. From then on, every time I saw her, it was like we had know each other for a long time. I am so glad I got to spend time with her at the wedding. That is the way I want to remember her. Love, Elene
